As 2018 comes to a close you might already be thinking about the new year and what it may bring. Maybe you’re imagining how you can get in shape or start a business. Maybe you have relationship goals and want 2019 to be a year when you meet a special person. Whatever the case, the New Year is a time to let yourself dream about what is possible. Invest In Your Diet

What do we mean by that? Spend time learning about nutrition and mastering new recipes. Add foods to your repertoire that are not only healthy but also tasty. The only way to break an old habit is to add positive ones that can take its place. If you expand your culinary skills then you can begin to develop new food rituals that will leave you happier and healthier. Exercise (Ideally With Others)

What’s the secret to exercise? If there is a secret, it’s simple: just do it long enough to see some results (if consistent, most people start to see and feel results within 4 weeks). Over time, it will become habit and hard not to do it. You will feel better and more energized when you’re finished and eventually look forward to that gym time each day. But how can you stick to it that long and mentally get to that point? Our best suggestion is to look for a team or group to join. Motivation is much stronger in a group setting. Look for group exercise classes or give yoga a try, or (if you’re really hardcore) try crossfit. If you’re not comfortable in a gym setting, think about what other unique opportunities are in your area. If you live near water, there may be team sports like rowing, surfing or kayaking. Get creative, and if you want your New Year’s resolution to stick, we recommend joining a group.


Educate Yourself

Maybe this is your year to learn something completely new. Such as: taking a college or online course, getting private lessons, learning a new language or maybe just something simple like reading a few new books. Even if you only have a few minutes a day, educating yourself can open tons of new doors and opportunities. If you drive often, consider getting a subscription to Audible, a library of audiobooks. If you have a smartphone you can get millions of free podcasts, which cover every imaginable subject. You can also download other learning apps from the app store. Such as Duolingo, “the best language learning app” according to The Wall Street Journal. It offers over 30 different languages in a game style interface to keep you interested and motivated. Now more than ever, information is abundant and often times free. So take advantage of it! Your education should never stop, and learning can help keep your mind healthy as you age.


Travel & Explore

It has been said that “travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer.” In keeping with that proverb, maybe one of your New Year goals is to see some of the world. You could take the plunge and go to a dream destination. However, if a big trip isn’t in the budget, you could even challenge yourself to start doing and seeing new things in your area. What’s something you’ve wanted to do that you haven’t made time for? Become an explorer of your own city or town. You may discover that the place where you live is more interesting than you thought. You might also find inspiration, meet new friends, or just rack up some interesting stories. Travelling isn’t just about location; it’s about paying attention to your environment and finding the little things that keep it interesting.


Take Care of Yourself & Find “Me-Time”

Remember, you’re not a machine–and that’s okay. Maybe you feel overextended or like everyone wants a piece of you. Maybe this year is a year to develop your “No” muscle. Along with that, you might need to say ‘yes’ to other things–such as rest, relaxation and time to recharge. Part of being healthy is finding time to care for yourself. If you’re a parent, you might not feel like that applies to you. It’s true that kids demand our attention the majority of the time. But there may be small ways to still get your me-time. If you’re and a morning person, wake up a little early to enjoy your coffee and some time to yourself before the day begins. If you’re a night owl, consider putting the kids to bed 30min. early so you have a little quiet-time to unwind and watch an episode of your favorite show. If you have family or close friends nearby, don’t be afraid to ask for a little help so that you can take an hour or two to get away, whether that means scheduling a pedicure or staying home to take a nap. Whatever the case, make taking care of yourself a priority. It will pay off in the long run.
