Procera Essentials Omega-3Omega-3 fatty acids have been in the news for many years and are most commonly associated with cardiovascular benefits. But new research reveals that a wide variety of biological pathways are affected by Omega-3, including how we metabolize vitamins, reduce oxidative stress, and support the cellular health of our liver, heart, brain, and eyes.
Deficiency in Omega-3 is WidespreadThere are three types of Omega-3 fatty acids—ALA, DHA and EPA. These polyunsaturated fats are considered “essential” because they are not produced by the body and must be derived from an outside source, such as food or supplementation. EPA and DHA come mostly from fish, which is why they are sometimes called “marine Omega-3s.” ALA, which is very common in the Western diet, is derived from vegetable oils and nuts, flax seeds, leafy vegetables, and fat from grass-fed animals. ALA is necessary for energy, but only about 1% of the ALA we consume is ever converted into EPA and DHA. We need Omega-3 fatty acids for optimum health . . . nearly every organ and system in the body—particularly the brain—benefits from them. However, most Americans don’t get nearly enough Omega-3. In the United States men only get 50% of the Omega-3 they need daily, while women only get 40% of the Omega-3 they need daily. This can lead to heart weaknesses, joint and bone issues, and even mood imbalances.
Preventative Medicine at its BestEvidence is growing that Omega-3 supplementation can offset the damage caused by the traditional Western diet, with its overabundance of red meat, sugar, poor fats and oils, and processed grains. EPA, in particular, provides long-term support of cognitive health.Procera Essentials Omega-3 has been certified by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA (GOED), which helps to ensure that Omega-3 oils are safe and of highest quality. A GOED certification also ensures compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
EPAEPA is a potent antioxidant and may protect against the toxic effects of free radicals. Because it protects our genes and cell cycle, it can provide excellent support for a variety of organs and systems in the body, including heart, joints, brain, cardiovascular system and immune system. Some studies suggest that along with a healthy diet EPA can help to reduce triglyceride levels. DHADHA is the most abundant Omega-3 fatty acid in the brain but is not created in great quantities within the body, so it must come from an external source. Eating at least two servings of fatty fish per week in combination with a daily Omega-3 dietary supplement ensures you are meeting your nutritional requirements. DHA is a key component of the developing brain and eyes, and continues to support brain and eye function throughout one’s lifetime. Supplementation with DHA later in life is especially important, as DHA can provide structural support to the brain.
