If you are passionate about making the most of 2019, consider this quote by Tony Robbins: “If we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.”
According to many thought leaders, our lives are determined less by mountaintop experiences than by the small, minute choices we make every day. So in light of that fact, our happiness this year will be determined mostly by our habits–the choices we make consciously and unconsciously. If you have determined to make 2019 your best year, then consider adopting these 4 success habits in your daily life. If you do, you may take a big step toward reaching your goal.
Maximize Your Sense of Flow
What is flow? According to Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow is a mental state of complete absorption in the current experience. Athletes refer to it as ‘in the zone,’ and musicians call it ‘in the pocket.’ Whatever it is, it’s a state of mind where time seems to stand still and you’re completely in the moment.
For the upcoming year, consider what activities you enjoy that put you in a flow state. How can you spend more of your day in the flow? On the flip side, what things take you out of the flow? According to Csikszentmihalyi, the happiest and most successful people in the world are those who spend most of time in a flow state. He argues that each person must find their own way of getting in the flow, and that it will differ for each person.
To inspire you to come up with your own list, Here are some activities that may induce a flow state.
1. Playing a musical instrument.
2. Art-painting, sculpture, drawing, photography.
3. Physical activities such as dancing, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, Yoga, etc.
4. Spiritual activities such as worship, prayer.
5. Outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming or skiing.
As you find ways to stay in the flow, you will discover a richer sense of fulfillment as well as higher energy levels. Good luck, and don’t forget to experiment. You might find your flow in something you’ve never even tried.
Less Screen Time, More Face Time
Although a phone detox may seem like cruel and unusual punishment, you might discover that it actually creates major benefits for your life and health. In a Forbes study, 3 out of 5 people claimed that they spend more time with their phone than their own spouse. Researchers are beginning to take note of the potentially harmful effects of technology addiction. Brigham Young University revealed in a study that excessive cell phone usage may not only damage your relationships but your psychological health as well. The study examined the effects of ‘technoference,’ which refers to technology interruptions from cell phones, computers, etc. The results indicated that participants who were tethered to their devices not only had less satisfying relationships, they also suffered from greater levels of mood imbalance.
If you are feeling dissatisfied and detached from the people around you, then reducing your screen time may be a good step. If you want to make a drastic change, then perhaps you could detox from your phone altogether for a period. It could be a powerful step to help you feel happier and more connected to others in your life.
Surround Yourself With The Right Tribe
You’ve no doubt heard this quote from Jim Rohn: “You are the product of the 5 people you spend time with the most.” At this point it’s basically accepted that running with successful people can help you find success yourself. Yet often times it’s not easy or obvious knowing where to meet inspiring or successful people.
Often times it takes proactive effort and a lot of putting yourself out there. You can begin with this question: “What does success look like to me?” Once you define success, ask yourself, “Who else would be seeking this?” If fitness is part of your success definition, then you might find a community at the gym or crossfit. If your success is more spiritual, then you might find a community at a church or even a meetup group. As you look for others who are passionately pursuing the same thing, you will find a ready-made support group to help you realize your goals.
There are many resources out there for finding your tribe, and it’s critical that you join with others on your journey. If you tend to be a solitary person, make a habit of intentionally spending time with others. No one finds success in a vacuum, and being with others will make it worthwhile.
